A downloadable game

This is a simple system that helps game masters, solo roleplayers, improvisers, and fiction writers to effortlessly generate unlimited ideas for adventures, worlds, characters, locations, stories, and scenes. It also guides you through the entire process of creating a complete and satisfying adventure.

  • Game Masters: use this system to develop adventures you can run for your players. You can use it to guide you through the process of developing an adventure on your own, or to collaboratively brainstorm ideas and create an adventure with other people (to make it easier and much more fun).
  • Solo Roleplayers: use it in place of random tables in your solo adventures, generate your world, characters, story premise, and use the prompts to inspire the scenes.
  • Improvisers: Collaboratively brainstorm and improvise stories with your friends! You can use this system to improvise and roleplay through an entire adventure in 30-40 minutes, completely from scratch, with no preparation or a Game Master!
  • Fiction writers: Use this system to develop stories for novels and screenplays.

It contains 4 decks of cards that offer hundreds of storytelling prompts.

Rotate the cards to change the prompts. Mix and match the prompts to create millions of unique adventure ideas!

  • Use location prompts to inspire settings for your adventures and locations for your scenes.
  • Use character prompts to inspire your heroes, villains, and NPCs. Combine character prompts with location prompts to develop more interesting settings ("Ancient Desert" + "Wealthy Shaman" = an ancient desert inhabited by a prosperous community of shamans who commune with the desert spirits).
  • Use target prompts as McGuffins your adventure revolves around - things the heroes may strive to obtain, steal, smuggle, trade, deliver, or destroy. Use them as clues to improvise mystery adventures. Combine them with settings to add an interesting feature the setting contains ("Forbidden Forest" + "Ancient Technology" = a forest where an ancient mech battle took place, now filled with remnants of battlebots). Use them as the sources of problems your heroes need to solve on their quests ("Occult Swamp" + "Feared Chest" = destroy the cursed chest containing the soul of an ancient swamp witch, which causes hauntings in the local forest).
  • Use action prompts as the hero objectives or antagonist evil plans to inspire quests. Use them as motivations to flesh out and develop your characters. Use them to create random encounters, events, and challenges to come up with scene ideas.

How to use this system to create adventures

  • Game Masters creating adventures: use the Adventure Brainstorming Template to turn these prompts into a complete adventure. Use Adventure Writers' Room to brainstorm and create adventures collaboratively with your friends.
  • Solo Roleplayers: use the Solo Roleplay Made Simple system to improvise an adventure from scratch, with no preparation (using these prompts as an oracle).
  • Improvisers: use the included rules for a short, simple, but very fun game where you improvise an entire adventure together with your friends in 20-40 minutes.
  • Come join our Discord community to collaboratively brainstorm and improvise adventures with other friendly and creative people!

Adventure Template

The adventure template will guide you through the process of creating an adventure - whether you're collaboratively brainstorming it with other people, or developing it on your own.

You can use just the first page to take notes as you improvise a quick adventure, or use both pages to brainstorm and develop everything you need to create a complete adventure that you can run for other players or publish.

Printable Cards and Digital Prototype

This project includes the card images you can print out:

And a digital prototype you can play in your browser (use it by yourself, or brainstorm adventures with your friends in a multiplayer mode!)

Very cool. However, once I enter my name on the digital version, I cannot click on anything?

Huh, really strange, thanks for letting me know! It seems to work fine for me, I'll try to test it some more and figure out what's going on.

If you have the time, you could send me a screenshot (here or via discord, my discord username is lumenwrites), that might help me investigate what went wrong.

Figured it out! When you're loading the game, you gotta select which player you want to play as and click "join". If you just close the "join game" window without joining the game, you won't be able to do anything.

The compact version (poker sized) when downloaded, downloads some sort of a pcio file that is 75 MB, almost exactly the same size as the folder with ALL the cards.

(1 edit)

Ah, it's compact in a physical sense - the same prompts are printed on fewer cards, so you end up with a slightly less pretty, but smaller and more convenient deck (and easier to print, since the cards are in a more standard format, and more services can easily print them for you).

I didn't account for the size of the files =)
