Elements of Adventure
A downloadable game
Elements of Adventure provides hundreds of storytelling prompts for Game Masters and Solo Roleplayers. Mix and match them to create millions of unique adventure ideas!
- Locations tables contain location aspects (e.g. "Hidden") and locations (e.g. "Tower") that you can mix and match to create locations like "Infested Pyramid" or "Forbidden Mountain".
- Characters tables contain character aspects (e.g. "Untrustworthy") and characters (e.g. "Cultist") that you can mix and match to create characters like "Ambitious Ruler" or "Cynical Assassin".
- Target tables contain descriptors (e.g. "Ancient"), and the targets (e.g. "Technology"). Targets are essentially McGuffins, things your heroes may strive to obtain, steal, deliver, craft, smuggle, or use as a clue in a mystery. You can mix and match them to create McGuffins like "Disguised Weapon" or "Famous Forgery".
- Objectives table contains the list of objectives the heroes may pursue throughout the story (e.g. "Perform a Heist").
- Events table contains the list of events the heroes may encounter on their journey (e.g. "Discover an opportunity in this place", or "Meet a character causing trouble.")
Most of the tables work for any genre, but some are fantasy-specific (keep an eye on this project, as I intend to release more genre-specific expansions, starting with sci-fi).
How to use this system to create adventures
- Game Masters creating adventures: use the Adventure Brainstorming Template to turn these prompts into a complete adventure. Use Adventure Writers' Room to brainstorm and create adventures collaboratively with your friends.
- Solo Roleplayers: use the Solo Roleplay Made Simple system to improvise an adventure from scratch, with no preparation (using these prompts as an oracle). I also recommend trying out The Wayfarer - a solo game about exploration and worldbuilding you can use to create worlds as you journey through them, and The Perfect Heist - a fun solo game about being the best thief in the world.
- Come join our Discord community to collaboratively brainstorm and improvise adventures with other friendly and creative people!
How to use Objectives
Each objective can be used as the goal the heroes will pursue throughout the adventure, or an evil plan of the antagonist that the heroes must thwart:
Defeat The Monster might mean that the heroes must hunt down an evil vampire, or it might mean that an evil dragon hunter wants to kill a baby dragon, and the heroes must stop him.
You can roll for multiple objectives to combine them into more complex adventure ideas:
Defeat The Monster + Rescue The Captive = The heroes have to defeat the monster who has captured someone, and help the captive to safely escape.
You can use some objectives as a sub-goals for the other objectives in order to create a campaign (or a more challenging adventure):
To Defeat The Monster, the heroes must:
- Obtain an Artifact (the only weapon that can slay it).
- Destroy a Dangerous Target (the source of its power).
- Commandeer a Vehicle (the only way to reach the monster's lair).
